Artist Statement

People write about their life;
I create art about mine.

My artistic approach is an autobiographical extension of the past, drawing upon my childhood memories growing up in Cuba, and my travels to India, Cuba, Bhutan, and Europe. I explore ontological questions of existence, focusing on themes of loss, loneliness, and displacement in a painting.

My process begins with a mental journey of an experience, thought, idea, or feeling. I have a vague idea of what I hope to accomplish as the work takes shape and leads the way. I do not limit myself to one medium, idea, or concept.

My current collage and paintings are created with multi-media materials that include appropriated street objects and printed photographs of street art from my travels. I also embed old personal ephemera.

I intuitively express the essence of my work by abstracting and configuring obscure images, forms, and voids within my narrative. Life is full of wonderment and ambiguity, and I strive to imbue this sense of mystery in my work. My goal is to create art that serves as a gateway for reflection and dialogue. Ultimately, this means I leave a piece of myself in every work of art that I create.
